El Matador
We don’t like to blow our own trumpet but I would like to take this opportunity to reemphasise the quality of Europe’s largest poker tournament - the paddypowerpoker.com Irish Open.
In April, 708 of the world’s best players competed in Dublin for the Terry Rogers trophy. The first player out was Carlos Mortensen. So basically the Irish Open attracted 707 better players than El Matador.

He has since gone on to win the WPT Championship and is currently in the running to win his second WSOP Main Event bracelet, all of which goes to show that other tournaments are pants and that the Irish Open is the greatest tournament in the world!
Mortensen is one of five remaining former champions still in the the 2007 WSOP. That’s 5 out of 337, or 1.5% of the field.
There were 18 former champions who started the tournament out of 6358 players, or 0.2% of the field. Therefore, by the power of math, you can clearly see that the ex champs are, as a group, outplaying the field!
We will be following Mortensen, Huck Seed, Robert Varkonyi, Berry Johnston and Scotty Nguyen as they continue their quest for double greatness…
