Carrick On Suir - This Months World Capital Of Poker Culture

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Congrats and hats off to two bastions of poker prowess, Johnluke and Lupos, who have strangled the ipoker $200,000 Guaranteed on PPP this month. A few of weeks back Johnluke took down $15,000 for a 3rd place finish…nice. Then last night Lupos won the bloody thing! A $44,000 takedown. Nothing too crazy about that I hear you bellow. But there is…both of these guys are from the sleepy and sometimes picturesque village of Carrick On Suir (Co.Waterford or Co.Tipperary…depending on what side of the place you hail from).

That is quite an achievement. As I type there are rumours of colonies of Carrickites on the run from a crack team of agents from HoldEm Investigators Ltd which have been deployed to extract secrets from this race of online prodigies.

More to follow…

Coming in the next couple of days….you’ve no doubt heard of Interview With A Vampire…well I’ll be having an Interview With A Fox! Brian “The Fox” O’Keeffe, 5th place in last years Irish Open will be telling me what he’s done with the 130,000 Euros he took away from The Burlington in 2007.

Should be interesting to say the least!

Qualifying For The Irish Open

Monday, January 28th, 2008

As we all know ( well hopefully you do! If not where the hell have you been!?) the Irish Open is kicking off on the 20th of March with Day One A of the Main Event €4200 + €300 in the luxurios City West Hotel!

Due to the huge demand there will be a second starting day on the 21st. With a capacity of 1000 players, will the Open get a Full House? After the outstanding result last year, I think its easy to say ‘’Yes!'’.

With a buy in of €4200 + €300 theres no messing about! Players who don’t want to pay it upright should have a go at qualifying online. Have a look at the tournament schedule!

A Bad Beat Memory from last year

As alot of poker players know, poker pro Juan Carlos ‘’The Matador'’ Mortensen went out first in the Irish Open last year. '’The Matador'’ got it all in after 11 minutes 15 second with his  A>H A>D against  K>H K>C , only to be destroyed by a 4 club flush on the board! Ouch!

Mortensen is the only player to win a WSOP Main Event and a WPT Championship. Hopefully we’ll see him back this year at the Irish Open, with better luck!

Bounty Hunting… it’s murrd-er!

Bounty Hunter Poker

Smoking Gun came oh so close to winning last night’s Bounty Hunter tournament … as the Bounty!  Having successfully knocked out the previous week’s bounty all eyes were on Smoking Gun as there was a $100 bonus awaiting any player who knocked him out.  52 players started the tournament and 50 of those had failed in their assassination attempts before heads up play began.  But being the first player to do the double proved to be just one step too far as murrd shot down Smoking Gun at the final hurdle.

It was a fantastic performance from both players and next week it will be murrd’s turn to play as the bounty - we will be watching eagerly to see if they can go all the way this time!

Don’t miss out on the most lethal game of tag on the net… take part in our Bounty Hunter tournament every Wednesday at 7pm.

Name: The Bounty Hunter
When: Every Wednesday Night at 7pm
Buyin: $10+$1
Type: Freezeout tournament 10 Minute rounds
Prize: Standard Prizepool + Bounty Bonuses $100 + $100 + $11

Gooberish Play!!

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Nic’s right there! With the massive field in the €50 rebuy last night we didn’t stand a chance from the get go! I played consistent coming up to the break. But about two hands before the break I went lala! Picked up AQ off in Mid position. A nice X5 raise quickly called by the button Hmmmmmm? Blinds 100/200 I have the opponent covered by about 10 BB’sNo other callers so we see a flop.

K4J pops up 2 spades.

I have a ‘’Master Plan'’ in my head at this stage and decide to check knowing only that he’s sure to bet. A bet of half the pot comes my way. I think back to his previous bets and reckon he could have a K but more than likely a just a J .Me thinks for a moment and confidently calls the bet of half the pot. (Wait maybe I should have check raised I think!)

A 9 on the turn doesn’t help me, but ‘’My Master'’ plan now comes into action! So I push the turn knowing that it’s an all in for him to call. He thinks for a long long time while I chew my gum looking quietly confident.  I have this one I think to myself!!! He can’t call his stack off with middle pair knowing I’ve only shown monster hands since the start of the tourney.

As I talk away to John about the Sat Next Tuesday I hear the words echo ‘’ I call ‘’. Uh oh!

To my dismay he turns over AJ. A disappointed me misses my 7 outs for the river and I think to myself ‘’ whoops!'’  Pretty much card dead for the rest of the tourney.

5 players left I ship it for 6000 with 59off on the big blind after 2 limpers for 1200. Called from the button by A9 off! Not even live cards! Harsh! A nine hits the flop but no 4 on forth or Fifth Street seals the deal. Gonzo!4 hours of play for nothing! And only 4 hours sleep before I rise for work! Doh!

As stupid as I felt about the AQ hand I knew Noel ‘’ My Hero ‘’ Hayes would be in the office tomorrow morning to offer his condolences.
‘’Why didn’t ya check raise the flop you donkey!'’ says Hayes.  Thanks Noel, what a guy.

Qualify for the Irish Open in the Sporting Emporium

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Myself and “Bad Beat Ryan” made a visit to the Sporting Emporium in Dublin last night to show off our live tournament skills and you’ll be glad to know that we both made the final table… from 16 players!

I finished 9th having donked off all my chips making a call on a King-high board with pocket Queens… it turned out to be a bad decision - of course he had a king!

So the Paddy Power Poker hopes rested with Bad Beat Ryan (so called because most mornings he arrives in to work complaining of some outrageous misfortune that lead to his 34 offsuit been run over by someone with pocket Aces).  True to form Ryan huffed and bluffed until he blew his own house down, crashing out in 5th place, two places short of the money.

So there you have it, we both suck at poker… but at least I got to bed earlier!

The Sporting Emporium is running live satellites to the Irish Open and offers a ticket to their satellites as part of the prize pool in all their other tournaments.
