Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

The €500 side event at the Irish Winter Festival was won by Nicholas Leszkowicz of Denmark - he took home €31,700.  The game ended at 6.40am, a truly exhausting day!  Below you can see the worthy winner being presented his cheque by paddypowerpoker.com Operations Manager Noel Hayes:

IWF 2008: €500 side event update - the long and winding road

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Oct 28th, 4.55am:

Wow, they are still playing!  There are 7 players left, with Big C centre stage with an average stack!  Ok, maybe not centre stage but certainly the centre of attention.  7th gets €3,800 and 1st gets €31,700 - quite a diffence!  Will a deal be made when they get five- or four-handed?  I probably won’t be awake then, you might have to find out in the morning!

IWF 2008: €500 side event update - Big C still in the mix

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Oct 28th, 2.30am:

Well, there are 12 players remaining in the €500 side event, and Ciaran ‘Big C’ O’Leary is still in the mix, with a stack a little under the average of 93k.  Dave Masters is also in there with a healthy stack and in good form - yes, they are on the same table!  The banter is great! :)

Summary of Action At Final Table

Monday, October 27th, 2008

We (Adam and Paul) are gonna use this post to update from the final table for anyone who is not looking at the feed and listening to Noel!  So will add updates to the post rather than moving the live stream off the top of the page - sounds logical, right?! :)   The newest updates are being added to the top of this post!

*

FIACHRA MEERE FROM LIMERICK JUST KNOCKED OUT CHRIS WOOD FROM ENGLAND - CONGRATULATIONS FIACHRA, IRISH MASTERS 2008 CHAMP and €150,000 RICHER!  Fiachra got it all in with A6 versus Wood’s JJ; the flop was 8 2 7, the turn was a 9 and the river a 5 to give Fiachra a straight and the title!

Chris Wood finishes in 2nd place and takes home €106,000.  Interesting fact; both players qualified for the Irish Masters via freerolls - in Fiachra’s case, a live freeroll in Fitzpatricks in Limerick and in Chris Wood’s case, an online qualifer.

Again, WELL DONE YOU TWO LADS! :)
*
PADDYPOWERPOKER.COM QUALIFIER JOHN RAFTERY ELIMINATED IN 3RD PLACE FOR €68,500 - 1.00am.  John Raftery and Fiachra Meere got their stack into the middle pre-flop, Rafferty holding KQ offsuit and Meere a pair of Queens.  The board ran out 98542, no sign of a King and so Raftery is out in 3rd - well done John!

*
Chipstacks from 10 minutes ago (12.35pm):

  • John Raftery - 1.9m
  • Fiachra Meere - 1.3m
  • Chris Wood - 1m (Chris qualified via an online freeroll and is guaranteed €68,500!  Nice work if you can get it)

Big C has 120k in the side event, 18 players remain of 203.

*

DAVID POOLE ELIMINATED IN 4TH PLACE FOR €57,000 - 12.22am. After playing half the day six-handed, they are now dropping like flies!  I missed the action, but caught the car-crash ending; David Poole with AJ all-in versus paddypowerpoker.com qualifier John Raftery with AQ.  Poole can’t catch up by the river and is gone - his railbirds were hoping for more but I’m sure they’ll agree with me that it is a great result for the Englishman!

*
PETER ‘Pete1234′ MURPHY ELIMINATED IN 5TH PLACE FOR €48,700 - 12.15am.  Murphy was short stacked (about 350k) after clashing with Fiachra Meere a few hands ago (Meere’s pair of Nines held up against Murphy’s AT for an approximately 600k pot), and got it all in with AT of diamonds versus Meere’s AJ offsuit.  The board read AKxxx after the river was dealt, and Murphy finishes a very impressive 5th place.

*
ACTION! Jamie Zambuni and David Poole got it all in pre-flop, Zambuni with AK offsuit and David Poole with QQ.  The flop was Ace-high, to the great dismay of Poole and his big crowd of railbirds.  A King on the turn seems to cement their misery, but a magical Queen on the river allowed them to erupt with a roar!  Poole had 369k, doubling through Zambuni, who was left with only 40k, a single big blind.  The very next hand Zambuni pushed, Poole, Meere and Wood called, checked down to the river, which Wood took with a set of fives, Zambuni has AQ offsuit.  Jamie Zambuni eliminated in 6th place for €40,500.  It’s 12.06am now…
*
Big C is the chip leader in the side event, Dave Masters is 3rd in chips with 23 players remaining.  Would LOVE to see them on the side table - imagine the banter!

*
We had an all-in and a call pre-flop!  Fiachra Meere pushed his short stack and was called by Jamie Zambuni in the BB (with the next shortest stack), Meere turned AJ offsuit, Zambuni AJ suited and they chopped the pot on a Jack-high board.  Meere pushed all-in the very next hand and took the blinds, showed a pair of Eights.

*
Amendment from Big C: he told me he had over 200k in the €500 side event - he actually ‘only’ has 130k (average is 53k with 23 remaining).  GO GO GO CIARAN!  He’ll be buying the pints tonight I suspect!

*
I’ll probably be savaged over this question: but can a structure be TOO slow? :)   Why isn’t anyone thinking of ionapaul or even the railbirds, who are getting tired and cranky!  Everyone still has loads of chips and no-one looks eager to get themselves knocked out chasing a gutshot or pushing with bottom pair! :)

*
Ciaran ‘Big C’ O’Leary has over 4 times the average stack on the bubble in the side event, he is sitting pretty on over 200k, average is 48.7k with 25 players left.  Get in there!

*
11.10pm: News flash! New payout structure agreed upon by the remaining 6 players during the break:

  • 1st - €150,000
  • 2nd - €106,000
  • 3rd - €68,500
  • 4th - €57,000
  • 5th - €48,700
  • 6th - €40,500

*
A nice-sized pot for John Raftery; Jamie Zambuni raised to 90k UTG, John Rafferty raised to 180k, the blinds folded and Zambuni called.  The flop was KQT with two hearts.  Zambuni checked and Raftery bet 150k into a pot of about 400k.  After a very long dwell, Raftery called clock and Zambuni instantly folded.  I just overheard Raftery telling his fans on the rail that he had a pair of Jacks!  The players are gone on a ten minute break.

*
Peter Murphy wins a nice pot; Chris Wood raised to 100k pre-flop, Murphy pushed in the cut-off.  David Poole claimed he knew Murphy was on tilt and asked for a count - the all-in bet was 640k.  This was more than Poole expected and he folded, as did Rafferty and eventually Wood.  After being probed by Poole for what he was holding and after Poole said he folded AQ, Murphy turned over AQ offsuit as the pot was being pushed his way.

*
Fiachra Meere is a lucky, lucky man!  He got it all in pre-flop with 94 offsuit versus Peter Murphy’s pair of Eights.  The flop of 9KQ was magic for him, though, and with a 7 on the turn and another Queen on the river, Meere doubles up to about 600k.

By the way, sorry we don’t have the manpower to cover the €500 side event - I can see from the clock there are 29 players left and our man Big C is one of them!  Approaching the bubble now, top 24 players get paid and 1st snags a very nice €31,700.

*
David Poole just won a small pot - he limped on the button, Raftery completed and Meere checked on the BB.  The flop came down 44T rainbow, both blinds checked, Poole bet at it and they gave up without much of a fight!

*
Peter Murphy is getting active and just took the blinds two hands in a row, once from the small blind and immediately after from the button of course! :)   Play has tightened up again.  Blinds 15k - 30k with a 3k ante for the next 30 minutes.
*
Very rough chipstacks at 10.10pm:

  • Wood - 1m
  • Raftery - 850k
  • Murphy - 800k
  • Zambuni - 770k
  • Poole - 550k
  • Meere - 380k

*
Fiachra Meere just doubled up Peter Murphy - all the chips went in pre-flop, with Murphy holding a pair of Jacks and Meere with a pair of Sixes.  The board was no help for Meere, so he loses almost 400k and Murphy shoots up to just over 800k

*
John Raftery, the paddypowerpoker.com qualifier, may have Chinese blood as eights have just proven very lucky for him!  He limped UTG+2, Fiachra Meere raised to 110k, the blinds folded and Raftery just called.  The flop came 88J, Raftery checked and Meere bet 250k.  Raftery pushed all-in for perhaps 400k or so, which Meere called.  Raftery quickly showed 88 for quads!  Meere looked sick as he turned over his tens, needing running tens to outdraw quads - the board bricked out so Raftery now shoots up to around the 1 million mark and is a force to reckon with at the table.  Meere was playing quite agressively, so I wonder will this knock back change his style at all.

*
Very rough chipstacks at 9.37pm:

  • Meere - 1.3m
  • Wood - 800k
  • Zambuni - 650k
  • Raftery - 525k
  • Poole - 480k
  • Murphy - 350k

*

The play has actually loosened up a good bit compared to earlier in the final table, but as the raises and re-raises are so big in comparison to the blinds, the vast majority of play is pre-flop.  However, we just got to see some cards!  Meere raised to 70k UTG, it was folded around to John Rafferty in the BB.  Raftery has been pretty quiet compared to the rest.  He checked dark before we saw a A53 flop with two clubs.  Meere bet 100k and Raftery instantly pushed all-in for about 300k.  Meere folded quickly.

*
The very next hand, Poole again raises - this time to 90k in mid-position.  Meere on the button asks for a count of what he has behind, about 400k odd.  Meere folds and Wood folds in the SB.  Peter Murphy dwells for about 2 minutes and I can see him check on a pair of sixes in the Big Blind.  Eventually he folds.

*
Two quick hands - 1) Meere raises to 70k in mid-position, Wood re-raises all in and Meere folds with a grimace.  2)  Poole button raises to 90k, Raftery folds but Meere re-raises all-in for LOTS.  Poole folds.  The very next hand Poole is all-in in mid-position and takes down the blinds.

*
Poole limps in mid-position, Fiachra Meere raises (can’t see how much), the blinds fold and Poole calls.  After a flop of 227 rainbow, Meere bets 240k.  Poole dwells for at least 90 seconds, then folds.  Seems Meere had a big hand there.

*

Another pot; Zambuni raises to 70k (blinds 12k/24k - 2k ante), called by Poole.  Meere and Wood in the blinds fold.  The flop comes 343.  Zambuni checks, Poole bets 100k and Zambuni very reluctantly folds.

*
Meere and Poole just split a smallish pot; the board read KTJT4, Fiachra Meere held K4 for a flopped two pair, but David Poole’s K9 caught up by the river to split the pot.

*
Break time is over - the 6 remaining players, Peter Murphy, Jamie Zambuni, David Poole, John Raftery, Fiachra Meere and Chris Wood are going for gold!  Lots of money to play for now, will be interesting to see how cagey things are.  This is ionapaul by the way, Admm had to hit the road for home - he did a bang-up job I think you’ll agree.
*

Break time! Players are now on a one hour dinner break. There’s 6 players left and now is where the big, big money starts to come into play! Can the players keep their cool?

*

It’s folded to Jamie Zambuni on the button, who raises 3xBB to 60k.  Poole in the SB folds and John Raftery raises to 170k in the BB.  Zambuni thinks it over for about 2 minutes and folds.
*
ANDREAS SCHIPPANI ELIMINATED IN 7TH PLACE: 7.29pm

The action went as follows; Fiachra Meere raised to 60k on the button, Chris Wood folded his SB and Andreas quickly shipped his entire stack on the BB.  It was 196k more to Meere and he made the call with KQ of diamonds.  Schippani flipped over T9 offsuit and was in serious trouble.  The flop was AA2, the turn was 8 and only 6 outs remained in the deck to save Schippani!  A 7 on the river sealed the deal, a big pot for Meere and Andreas goes home €24,000 richer.
*
A big double up for Jamie Zambuni - he gets it all in on the turn vs Andreas Schippani.  The flop was AK5, the turn was a Jack - Jamie turned over JJ while Andreas held AT!!!  A meaningless Ace on the river and Jamie wins a big 750k pot.

*
WARREN WOODALL ELIMINATED: 19:14
Warren Woodall has just been eliminated. Warren pushed over the top all-in of John Raftery’s raise and when action got back to John he made the call showing AT against Warren’s QQ. To really epitomise how bad Warren ran at this final table, the Ace from space arrived on the flop and it was the final nail in his coffin. He takes home €17,180.

*

A minute or two again with blinds at 10k - 20k / 2k ante, Woodall raised to 55k on the button, Meere reraised to 210k on the SB and Woodall folded.

*

Peter ‘Pete1234′ Murphy has snagged a nice pot by re-raising Chris Wood’s pre-flop raise - Wood folded and Murphy showed 45 suited.

*

Wassim Shahid was first to be eliminated. His push with A5 found a customer in the much better off Fiachra Meere who showed JJ. Despite an Ace coming on the flop there was also a Jack. No further help and Wassim takes home €10,500.

IWF 2008: Woodall getting sod-all at final table

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Oct 27th, 6.27pm:

I know most of you are following the action live on our embedded stream (with MC BigCityBanker on the mic and Ross ‘The Boss’ O’Mullane on the camera), but I noticed the following two hands that impacted Warren Woodall while railing the final 8 players.

In the 1st hand, Warren’s AK was up again AQ, but wasn’t any good on a AQxxx board.

An orbit or two later, he had to give up a sizable pot when his JJ were outdrawn by AJ - ace-high board as standard!

IWF 2008: €500 side event update - Big C on a charge

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Oct 27th, 6.06pm:

Big C at the IWF 2008

Big C has fought his way back from about 3.5k in the €500 side event and is now sitting on 12k or so, a little over average stack.  There are still 107 players left, just over 50% of the starting field.

IWF 2008: €500 side event update - loads of chip counts

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Oct 27th, 4.44pm:

Even though almost all eyes are on the main event (currently on a break as they are down to 9 players, the final table - the October Nine! :) ), I’ve been wandering through the €500 side event area to get you a few selected chip counts.  Most of these are educated guesses, which is made a little more difficult by the similar colours used in the 500 and 1000 denomination chips - at least they look similar from a couple of feet away!

  • Ciaran ‘Big C’ O’Leary - 3.6k
  • Mick McCloskey - 15k+
  • Vera Duffy - 3.3k (up to 5.5k after taking down a nice pot with AA)
  • Jayminator - 5.2k
  • Paul Lecky - 4k
  • George McKeever - 3.7k
  • Keith McFadden - 9k (then was involved in a pot with an all-in short stack, the shorty’s AQs outdrew Keith’s Dueces)
  • Neil Channing - 14k
  • Mike ‘Oz’ Osbourne - 25k
  • Dave Murray - 11k
  • Willie Clynes - 8k (after taking down a pot or two while I wandered by!)
  • Liam Flood - 15k+
  • Daragh ‘Doke’ O’Kearney - 5.5k
  • Scott Gray - 4.7k
  • Dave Masters told me ‘Don’t come near me!’ when I looked (I must be terrible luck) so who knows what he has now! :)

Blind are 100 - 200 and there are 150 players left, average stack is 8,100.
